Meet our new Young People’s Advisory Board

Who are the new YAB members?

As the National Deaf Children’s Society, we think it is important to find out what deaf children and young people think! That’s why before Christmas, we were on the lookout for deaf young people to join the next Young People’s Advisory Board (YAB).

We found 19 new members, aged 13-16 from across the UK who agreed to join the board because they wanted to help make things better for deaf young people! The new YAB is made up of 12 girls and 7 boys. 4 are British Sign Language (BSL) users, 5 use BSL and speech, and 10 use speech.

What’s the new YAB up to?

During the first weekend of February, the new YAB members met for the first time! They took part in team building activities to get to know each other and found out what they’ll be doing for the next two years! They also learnt about their role as a YAB member, and we do as the National Deaf Children’s Society.

More importantly, they talked about what it’s like being deaf – the good things and the difficult things. The YAB also identified that the support given to them when considering their future careers and work options was often poor and not very deaf aware. Because of this, the YAB voted that it would be their top priority.

To campaign on their chosen topic, the YAB will have to come up with ideas and ways to take action to help and improve things! At their next event in June, the YAB will decide what they are going to do to and how you can get involved.

YAB member Eloise, 13, from Essex said ‘I thought it was absolutely incredible, I had a lovely time meeting up with other people my age and it was really good to meet other deaf young people to share our experiences’.

Want to get involved?

The YAB found out about all the exciting opportunities they could get involved in to help raise awareness about the things that matter to deaf young people like you!

And the YAB represent all deaf young people from across the UK, including YOU! Get involved and share your views! So if you’re interested in supporting the YAB, send us an email ( to let us know!

Stay tuned for next month’s YAB update and to find out more about the YAB members and what they’ve been up to!
